If they had been slaves in 1860 and were residing in Nash County, their owner may not have been part of the census, or, they may have been loaned out to another slave owner elsewhere in North Carolina, or they may have been free persons who were not counted in the 1860 slave census in any event. The slave schedules can only be used as a guide to finding slave ancestors because these enumerations (for 1850 and 1860) give the names of the slave owners, but rarely give the names of individual slaves.
